40 miles, 23,000 feet, (2006 route)
Glen Shiel is one of the most obvious places for a long round in Scotland, with fine ridges linking a multitude of Munro summits. The round of the glen takes in 16-22 Munros depending on which of the Eastern summits are included. My initial winter round in 2005 took the shorter option whilst, a subsequent attempt in deep snow took the longer version. Both are very natural lines, especially the shorter round and made unforgettable winter journeys, though not what I had planned. The intention was to do Jon Broxap's record breaking Munro round but over 2 or even 3 days. Deep crusty snow put paid to that along with a troublesome crampon strap, but the resulting one day round of Glen Shiel was a magical solo adventure in the deep of winter.
